Special Exhibit Opens at the Nye Museum:

“The 17th Century World of Benjamin Nye & Katherine Tupper”

The Nye Museum will open its doors for the summer 2021 season beginning June 22. Guided tours of the 1678 Benjamin Nye house will be available Tuesdays – Saturdays 11AM – 4PM. This year, a special exhibit entitled, “The 17th Century World of Benjamin Nye & Katherine Tupper” will be on display in the Welcome Center.

The exhibit explores early settlement life in East Sandwich, with a focus on architecture, material culture, and industry. It features amazing archaeological artifacts, many of them recovered from the Benjamin Nye Homestead. Recently, we discovered a ram skull talisman beneath the floorboards of the 17th century borning room. The talisman is an example of an apotropaic artifact, placed there sometime when the house was first constructed in 1678 in order to protect its inhabitants from evil. It will be on display with other artifacts in “The 17th Century World of Benjamin Nye & Katherine Tupper” from June 22 until September 17.

Admission if $5.00 and free for members.

The Nye Museum is dedicated to promoting and preserving the Benjamin Nye Homestead, chronicling the property’s historical significance, and fostering community engagement through historical education and events.
